Default Dodge non Turbo... Question.

Was talking toa guy that is Diesel mechanic certified... and was takling to him about the cummins 6 engine. My dream truck :P (I own a hemi now... but i'm getting more horses, hauling more, etc)...

I talked to him about the non turbo edition and he said there is no such thing as a NON turbo diesel. Because they don't use spark plug? Now, I know there are NON turbo diesels. So A) the guy doesn't know what he is talking about obviously. He is saying it needs some sort of air induction because it uses compression to ignite. I know this... But why can't you get enough compression from normal air flow to ignite? And then the down stroke from ignition will pull in from the other cylinders stroke (just like a gasoline)... I just don't know why this guy thinks you HAVE to have a turbo :P Anyone else have anything to add I can tell this guy? I sat and actually argued a bit with him... heh...

He is certified. And works in our pipe fitting department, I think I understand why.

It is not a matter of not running it just would not create the power that a turbo provides(more air, more fuel bigger bang)
some of the older diesel trucks were non turbo but I believe all of the Dodges have been.

Heck, the old ford 7.3 and 6.9 weren't turbocharged. Dodge has always had a turbo on their diesel trucks though. If he needs proof, pull the turbo off of a 12v cummins (cap off the oil feed to the turbo) and go drive it around

There is no such thing as a "non turbo edition", but there is such a thing as a "non turbo diesel"

I wasn't even discussing with him about the cummins... i was just talking in general with him becuase I have a friend with a older cummins 6 turbo. Might get it cheap, might need work. And I asked him if he knew about Cummin motors and he said ya, then I asked him about turbos. And we got into a discussion and then he stated that there is no such thing as a non turob diesel motor. All diesels need turbos... and thats when I smiled and just avoided arguging. Heh.. Again, I can see why he works in our pipe shop. :P GOD BLESS THE CUMMINS! i want one bad...

I don't know about diesels in cars and trucks in general, but growning up on my grandparents farm none of the diesel Deere's (talking 60's vintage here) we owned had turbos, turbos were after market. Should have thrown the BS flag on that one.

Two-stroke diesels require a supercharger for scavenging, perhaps this was the confusion?

Like stated, all the HD trucks have turbos on their diesel engines. Although you don't have to have a turbo on it but it wouldn't make much power at all. I have a diesel, non-turbo skid loader but that thing only cranks out 52 ponies. If our trucks didn't have a turbo on them they'd be turds just like the old ford 6.9l diesels. You can't go out and buy a new diesel (ford, chevy, dodge) that doesn't have a turbo on it these days.

This guy sounds a little kooky. There are plenty of non-turbocharged diesels out there. I have a friend who has a 1973 38' Hatteras yacht, powered by twin Detroit Diesel 6V-71s. Those engines are two stroke, have a displacement of 7.0 liters, and put out 250 hp each. They certainly do not have turbochargers, but they do have gear driven superchargers. I love those old Detroit Diesels. Eachengine holds 24 quarts of oil, and after oil changes the waste oil goes right in the fuel tank!

I love a DD 2 stroke when it's running right, but the tune up on those things before DDEC, injectors, fuel rack, governor, all mechanical YIKES.
