starting and shifting problems
What is the temp outside when you are trying to get the light to turn on? The grid heater turns on when the temp falls below 56 degrees F. If it is warmer than this it does not turn on. There is some info in your owners manual. (Mine is an 07....not sure if the same applies to your 98.5)

Well after all that, it turns out the WTS light not coming on was just the result of a week battery. I just installed new batteries and the light started working again. This was after my mechanic told me I needed a new instrument cluster at the cost of $900. Good thing I didn't listen to him.
Well since I put the new batteries in, I haven't noticed the truck hunting for gears either. Since it is not hunting for gears, there has been none of that vibration that I talked about. I got underneath the truck and played with the u-joints and tried to get them to move to see if there was any play, but could not find any. The truck is still a bit difficult to shift into reverse. I haven't noticed it make that ping noise when I shift into reverse in a while, but that noise seems to come and go.
The truck hasn't done the vibration thing since I changed the batteries. The bad vibration happened when it was hunting for gears. The u-joints seem fine from what I can tell. I got underneath the truck and tried to wiggle them around, but could not sense any play.
