Default OT: Help with a "Piece of Shevy" car?

My favorite mother-in-law has a chevy aveo. The brake lights went out along with the safety switch that keeps you from shifting out of park without the brake applied. I checked all of the fuses and they look good. There is some type of solenoid or something on top of the brake pedal that makes a clicking noise when you try to shift it out of park. Me and wiring are not good friends. Any ideas?

There should be a switch on the brake pedal assembly somewhere for the brake lights. The switch could also control the park lock solenoid

Do you think that switch went bad?

If you have a multimeter you could test it. It seems odd that BOTH lights have quit at the same time. I would be either suspect of the switch or a fuse somewhere.

I too would suspect the switch. I was at a local checker auto parts one night and this girl had a 05 kia something or another and her brake lights were not working and would not come out of park without a lot of force. The wonderfully smart ASE certified part guys could not tell her what it is I told her it must be a fuse, relay or brake light switch. we checked and replaced fuses, checked the relay (removed another and placed there) not that. I told her it was the switch. the guy at the counter could not locate a part number and he told her that there was no switch. I showed the guy the switch. asked him how much he actually knew about cars. then I showed her where the little "Shift lock" bypass was and showed her how to use it. Car was still under warruntee so she was going to try the dealer first. I never got a call from her about it so I assume she figured it out.

ok. so the shifter for sure is a warranty. (former chebby technician) and the switch seems to be the culprit for your brakes. but do the usual checks. start at the lights and work back till you get 12v.
