I've been in the military for 17 years. I'd do it again.
While the military lifestyle is not for everyone, it offers many benefits such as college money, job security, self-discipline, positive self-image, travel, and a pension after 20 years (don't see that much anymore). No doubt, it is a challenging time to be in the military (particularly the Army), but this war will not last forever. I know employers are tripping over themselves looking for ex-military to hire, so even if you only stay four years, you'll be setting yourself up for future success.
Good luck.

Your user info indicates Vancouver as your location. Are you talking about military service in Canada? I imagine military service has a lot of common features in both our countries.
I did five years of active duty in the US Air Force, and have been a reservist for six years in the US Air Force Reserve. During the last six years I have been mobilized (temporarily called to active duty) twice, including a six-month deployment to Afghanistan last year. Overall I enjoy the military, and I would recommend it for any young man who wants to serve. Also, if you have the choice of various career fields you should select one that gives you some career options when you get out. Vehicle tech isokay, but jet engine tech is probably better. I've heard that US Navy-trained underwater welders make some serious bucks on the outside. Also, not sure if it works the same way in Canada but here in the States certain military specialties require a Top Secret security clearance. Those specialties include intelligence, special operations, most aircrew members, and investigators. Having a clearance can translate into a high paying job after the military.
Good luck with whatever you do.

^^^^ All is true. Any of the technical carreer fields give you good options on the outside if you know where to look.
The GI Bill is a pretty sweet deal for college. The Air Force has it own Community College, and you get credits for Basic, technical school, and professional military education classes.
You definetly won't get rich in the military, but it is a good steady job, and the pay is pretty good after the 8 year mark or so.
I've been an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force for 15 years now. I'd do it again, but I would have done a few things differently -- like study harder for promotion tests and take more college classes.
I like to travel, so I've gotten to go a lot of places I wouldn't have otherwise, it's also how I met my wife.
<<Oh, and I finally figured out how to make an avatar

My vote is yes for military. Choose your branch carefully. First thing you need to know is exactly what you want to do. Then it will be easy to figure out where to go. Good luck with your choice.

In all seriousness, that's a tough decision that you and your family are going to need top make. I was on the verge of joining myself but decided to go to school and enter the workforce. I kinda regret my decision now.Of the people I work with about 50% have served. You can spot them a mile away. I don't know what it is about them exactly but they are the people you can count on, the ones you can trust, and the ones that you'd be friends with outside of work. It just does something to your character that you can't get or learn anywhere else. Not to mention the opportunities that it opens up for you career wise when you get out. You can claim Veteran's Preference onGovernment jobs and most employers in the private sector jump to hire veterans.
BTW: just figured out you were Canadian. You can translate that into Canuck and take it for what it's worth. I'm sure it's not much different. Just a lot more hockey fans. Go Penguins.
Good luck in whatever you decide.
thanx for all the input!
yes i do live in Vanacouver Canada and i would be joining the Canadain military. if i did join i dont think that i would see deployment becuase of canada's most likly departure from afghanistan in 2011. i am doing this more or less for training and future job opportunities.
