I was always told there are 3 guarantees with concrete:1. It won't burn.2. No one is going to steal it.3 It is gonna crack.

Well, I called the guys that did the concrete patio work. They looked at my crack and pretty much told me that it's been a year and a half and is only hairline stress cracks and wasn't bad enough to do anything about.

They said to call them back in the spring, to see how much worse, if any it gets.

We wouldn't fix it.... but then again, we do shabby work .

J/K dude, we would go and take a look at the situation and then be as honest as we could with the customer as to who is at fault, and then go from there. If it was within 1 year we would fix it even if it wasn't our fault (most likely). For hairline cracks, we probably would have told you the same thing they did.... call us back after winter and we'll see what has happened.

later

Here a picture, hard to see. This is just where it intersects, it runs the width of the patio both directions. There are a couple more intersections for other cracks, just like this as well.

BTW, I checked out Nick's concrete company website and watched the movie of the guys working. (I didn't see Nick in the movie???)

I am a civil engineer and deal with this sort of thing regularly. I really think it sounds like they did an incomplete job if they did not cut in joints or relief cuts as Mr. Coletti said. Typically this is done a day or two after the concrete is poured, while it is still green(ie. not totally hard). However, i believe it is fairly common practice by contractors to only have a one year warranty period.i would definitely get some grout in those cracks as soon as possible and you may not have any more problems.

One thing i forgot to ask is - what was the issue with your foundation settling?? You may have soils that don't compact very well which could certainly contribute to cracking.

We have expansive clay soils that when wet expand, when dry shrink. Most homes are built slab on grade and move with the shrinking and expanding of the soils. My house, from the middle of my housethrough the bedroom wing, over 65 years, tilted about 5.5 inches; about half the house was out of tolerance. (The living area wing was level.)

They installed piers under the house to jack it back up to level the slab. Piers were installed about every 6 feet grid, around the perimeter and tunneled underneath. The piers are pushed in the ground, lifting the slab, until they hit maximum resistance with a 100,000lb hydraulic jack. Most of my piers are 12-15 feet deep. (Bedrock is real deep where I live.)

Fortunately, I had little interior or cosmetic damage because my foundation moved as a unit instead of cracking.

well to be honest what the contractor told you would of been the same thing we would of being that they are only hair line cracks with no trip hazzards, BUT like i was saying..... we stay under 10x10 with all af our work unless its 6" and that would be 15x15. im about 99% sure you patio is 4" because i have never seen or heard of a patio 6" and being that its 4" there should be cuts or expansion in there. either way put some kinda of silicone in there and call it day untill spring. quickcrete makes a nice crack filling product that you can pick up from lowes or home depot for about 8 bucks a tube... its self leveling and is grey so its easy to use and not that much of an eye soar.

solarwarp.... the video (haha), that video is SOOOO STUPID! i keep saying its gotta go but no one does anything about it, oh well. but i am in the video or the 3 second clip i should say but my back is turned.

mayfair.... we are just finishing up with our season this week and maybe we have some work next week but its a sooner than later situation which is GREAT! gives me time to hardly work compared to workin hard thru the summer it has been cold here lately, we had a high of 43 degree's today and its supose to stay like this untill it gets colder
