I've got a 1994 2500 Cummins TD 4x4, power steering is fine with engine running but if you switch it off and rock the steering, power steering fluid pours out of the cap on the filler bottle, anyone come across this before?.thanks.

I noticed the same situation when I added dye to my PS. I have not addressed the problem yet. I'll check when I get home on friday and see if it's still doing it. Sorry for no help but at least you are not alone with the problem.

Default RE: Power Steering Question

I have seen this many times, One culprit is if the level got really low (blown hose or such) and you refilled it, there is a bunch of air trapped in the system, If not that then the pump is on its way out and its foaming the oil so bad that it expands the fluid so much that it shoots out of the fill cap, this is usually what we see on trucks that come into the shop, one word of advise is we have had very little luck with remanufactured pumps, A new one is twice the money, but it is not a fun item to change, let alone doing it twice. If you install a new pump, be very careful of the seal that is inside the housing where the pump nose mounts, If you damage it, engine oil leaks like crazy between the vac pump and power steering pump, (yes i have done it a few times and I have replaced alot of them) Then follow directions in the box to bleed out the air, If you think its just an air pocket, post back and I will explain how to bleed it out.
