Does a 3rd gen 5.9 cummins idle up automatically?
so its normal u r saying to idle up automatically to 1000 rpm when cold. how long should it idle at 750 rpm before going to 1000 rpm? it took mine like 2 minutes before it did. Can we idle them up manually or not?
for auto's if the function is enabled you can do it by use of the cruise control, and yes it will automaticaly idle up after a little bit.
if you have a stick you will need a grounding wire to acomplish this.

What year did they start putting the high idle function in? I have a 2004.5 and would like to get the high idle function enabled if it is available. How does it work? Mine idles up a few minute after I start it then idle down, but I would love to be able to bump it up sooner!
the high idle is a 3rd gen thing. . .Norman, you will need a grounding wire from cummins to hook up to the ECM and then have the dealer enable the function for you to use it.
have ya ever listen to a ferd rattle when its cold? They sound like they're about to fall apart!! They have the most disconcerting rattling and knocking I've ever heard... I tend to keep my distance from em, for fear something may come flying out from under the hood and hit me!

is this something I can hook up myself? If so do you have a Diagram of where on the ECM to hook to and I am asuming that it just hooks to the frame.

Wow. I knew it would kick to high idle and assumed it was normal, but had no idea I could manually do it. I will have to try it when I go home. Sounds similar to a Mack I drove and how we set the PTO speed.

sorry for not getting back with you earlier but there is apigtail with a part number you can order directly from cummins. . .I dont have it off hand, but you tap that wire onto pin 22 on ECM plug B, then just ground that wire to the frame. go to the dealer and have them enable the high idle function. after they have it enabled you turn the cruise control on, then push set and the engine will automaticaly idle up to 1100rpm. then you can use the accel and decel buttons to raise and lower the rpm's by 100rpm's to a max of 1500rpm.
Thanks Drew
I am assuming that Plug B is the one on the Right. I am going to call Cummins to find out about that pigtail tomorrow! Then I need to call the Dodge Steeler to see how much of my money they are going to take![:@]
