Default Pumps,pumps,pumps

Will someone please explain what is the difference between a Fuel Pump,Transfer Pump and a Fuel Injection Pump. On my earlier posts about warranty and after 2 replies I am more confused. I called the dealership where I bought the truck (had it repaired at a different dealership)from and they said it fiel pump would not be covered under warranty. Any answers would be helpful.

The transfer pump supplies fuel to the injection pump. The injection pump creates the pressures needed to spray fuel into the cylinders

Fuel pump - Lift pump - Transfer pump all are names for the same thing. It is the pump the get's the fuel from your tank and then supplies your injection pump which is the pump that Jake just described above.

however on the HPCR's you have two fuel pumps. . .one is a high volume low pressure pump, the other is a high pressure pump that feeds all 6 injectors through a common fuel rail.

injector pumps feed jerk style injectors and tipicaly have an operating pressure around 5,000PSI. the high pressure pump for the 3rd gen engines normaly operates between 5Kpsi at idle and 26Kpsi full throttle.

I just had my transfer pump replaced by the dealer and they said it was covered under the 100k mile Cummins warranty. I would get a second opinion if a dealer refuses to replace the transfer/lift pump under warranty.

Either pump is covered under the 100,000 mile warranty on the Cummins motor. Many of us have had the lift pump(fuel pump) replaced. Pre-2005 they were either mechanical or outside the fuel tank. Those outside the tank have a substantial failure rate. Pumps in the tank tend to be more reliable. According to the dealer, the pumps pushing the fuel from the tank tend to fare better than those outside the tank sucking the fuel towards the motor.

The dealer said that mine was in the tank. I have a 2004.5. Is this right or did he know what he was talking about?

from the factory, all trucks built before 1/05 had the pumps mounted to the back of the fuel filter canister. . .after 1/05 they were put in the tank.

if you bought the truck new then the dealer is lost. . .if you bought it used chances are it could have been relocated since there was a TSB on this.
