Where to put PYRO sender?

RE: Where to put PYRO sender?
it's really pointless to put the probe post turbo... who cares what the temp is there. You want to keep an eye on the cylinder temps which the EGT in the manifold gives you some idea of. The close to the cylinder, the closer to the temp you'll be reading. You can bet though, if you're seeing 1400F at the manifold, the cylinder temps is probably closer to 1800F or higher

RE: Where to put PYRO sender?
The pics wouldn't cut and paste. Heres the instruction manual see page 22. I put mine where they did.
4. It is necessary to tap a small hole into your exhaust manifold to insert the
EGT sensor.
The EGT probe must be mounted in the exhaust manifold
before the turbo inlet to operate properly.
Drill the hole using a 21/64" or
5/16" drill bit, then tap it with an 1/8" NPT tap
(see figure 4). Once the hole
is drilled and tapped, run the motor at idle for 10 to 15 seconds to clear the
few remaining shavings from the manifold.

Once the engine has been run, screw in the fitting and insert the EGT sensor by
sliding it into the hole
(see figure 4) and tightening the back end fittings (see
figure 3)

RE: Where to put PYRO sender?
Post turbo is useful for monitoring the turbo, pre turbo monitors the engine.
I put the probe for the Juice/Attitude post turbo in the downpipe. Since the J/A has a turbo timer built in,I wanted to use it, but I also want to make sure I don'tpush the engine too hard so Iordered a DiPricol EGT and will mount the probe pre turbo.
I bought a pillar that will hold my Attitude and 1 guage that I will mount the EGT in. I think it will work out nicely.

There is good guage install info at Diesel Manor.

The first pictures are for EGT. If you click on the pictures, they will open up and give pretty decent instructions. They show two different locations for the pyro probe in a pre turbo setup. Just don't try to drill in the center part of the collector just above the turbo--there is a web in there and it's not just a big open area. I think it was Woligator that found that out
Go to Lowes and get a 1/8" NPT tap. It looks like a 1/4" SAE tap, but it will be marked 1/8" NPT. On the tap it will tell you what size drill bit to use to drill the hole. Any decent drill bit will go right though the cast iron manifold.
One nice thing about putting the probe post turbo is you can take the whole down pipe out and drill and tap it on the workbench, then just reinstall it-no chance of getting shavings in the turbo

RE: Where to put PYRO sender?
post turbo is good for turbo timers and a gage on when to shut the engine off so as not to damage the turbo. . .pre turbo is the best placement. . .I mean, if you want the best temp readings of how hot the fire is. . .you cartianly want to put the probe in the hottest spot right?
