Default getting a CTD

Hey guys. I was a poster in the 2gen section for a while, and am upgrading to a CTD when i return from iraq. Sooooooo, here's my dilemma. I'm trying to figure out which deal is going to be better.

I'm definately going CTD with my next truck (my 99 gasser 1500 sport is great, just bad mileage while towing), and I'm looking for a 2500 quad cab 4x4.

I really would like to get an 08 since i've never had a new vehicle, and it would be nice to have a brand spankin new truck, but I'm leary of the 6.7 right now. It's a cummins so it can't be all bad, but what i've been seeing on here for MPG figures scares me. My gas truck gets better mileage than some of them (granted it won't tow with it, nor will it get the same mileage driving around, but that's 70 percent of what I'm doing). BUT... would i be better off getting a low mileage used 03+ in the same configuration with the 5.9?

The big kicker to all of this is that with the incenteves dodge is offering now, and the discount i get for buying it overseas, I can get a new 08 6.7 for about the same price as i can get an equally equipped 40,000 mile 03+ 5.9, hence my dilemma.

sooo, what are some opinions in here? I plan on doing a basic intake, programmer, and exhaust to either (eventually, but not right away). It's main job will be daily driving, with the occasional towing of the race car, and a very occasional light off roading. Discuss!

where abouts in Iraq are you. . .there are some units from Georgia that are getting ready to head to baghdad.

anyway, the 6.7L does have its issues, however dodge is working on them and so far they seem to be getting things figured out. There are some here that have upgraded from the 5.9 to the 6.7 and have enjoyed every moment. . .some got the 6.7L only to trade it in for a 5.9.

when it comes to exhaust mods. . .the muffler is already a flow through design. . .removing it makes no difference, however yanking the cat/DPF does make a difference. no more regen's and fuel mileage actualy increases, however these kits are for off road use

I know the deals you can get through AAFES, came close to droping some dime on an 01 cummins when I was in Bosnia. you just need to look at fuel cost right now. . .it takes me about $3.25 to fill up[:@]

i am by no means an expert. i have an 04 5.9 and love it. good mileage and out pulls the "other" brands that my buddies drive. i have some friends who went from the 5.9 to the 6.7 and are really happy with the switch. on the other hand, some are not. sometimes what works for the goose, aint gonna work for the gander. good luck with whatever you decide. i dont think you will disappointed. it's a cummins!

I'm up north. I was in baghdad for my last tour. Thank god i'm not there anymore *whew. Also, another consideration... I've heard that the 6.7 can't run more than 10% bio, what about the later model 5.9's? can they run more bio?

the 5.9's can run b100 no problems. . .the 6.7's I'm unsure of. Im pretty surecummins has certified atleast b5 on them, but I'll need to look around and see.

with the DPF I would imagine it wouldnt like the Bio as much.

First, stay safe brother, don't get complacent before you get back. You know the stupid stuff happens when you get close to rollin' out.

Do you plan to do any mods to it or leave it "mostly" stock?

If you want awesome aftermarket support for anything you can possibly imagine, get a used 5.9. Besides, it'll damn near run forever anyways.

If you want the new truck, then go with 6.7. Has that nice new tranny and the exhaust brake already.

Be careful ordering it through AAFES, sometimes its a good deal but you can usually work a better one on you own. Only good thing about it is that you can order the truck from the factory and have it waiting for you when you get in. Just my .02 on that one.

the thing with the bio is most likly the injectors, and them getting cloged, but like the guy drew said , the new DPF systems dont like it because they where not designed for it. other than that it's pretty mucha bigger 5.9.hope this helps
