they didnt hook up all of the alignment gear, just used the rack to lift the front end for the inspection.

Well the jury is back and the verdict is in. Finally had some free time to check the ball joints, I would think that if I have approx. 0.250 total up and down movement in my ball joints that it would be best to replace them at this point, and thats my best visual guess with out putting a dial indicator on it.
