OT: which laptop?
well, thanks guys for your input.... i kinda figured there'd be bias and whatnot. everyone has a preference. i guess i'll have to wait and see what happens after the 15th. and if i do decide on a mac book, my desktop will ALWAYS remain a pc. i build them from scratch and i can upgrade anytime i want and if there is a problem i can fix it!
all these people speak of security issues with windows?? I have never once had a virus and or spyware problems with any computer i've had with windows. just use a quality firewall and antivirus and you are good to go.
Well, to sum it up, only 5% of people drive BMW & Mercedes and because most people drive Chevys, you should get a Chevy too, cause you can make it handle like a BMW with enough aftermarket upgrades and make it as fast too and you can do it on the cheap......... or you could just buy the BMW and leave the tinkering to the common folk. There is a reason those who switch to Mac don't go back.

Have you looked at used Apple hardware prices vs used PC hardware? Clearly your joking or poorly informed or live somewhere they have to pipe sunshine into

That's usually because they've lost all ability to know how to do anything.....since any 5 yr old is a qualified Mac user......that and by the time some want to switch back...they're already several thousand in the hole and cant give their crap away....

Are we going to be using laptops a few years from now?
Different family members are buying
LG smart phones, Nokia 810s, Asus EEE mini-computers with no hard drive
and it sure looks to me like
cell phones, gps, video game players, and computers
are going to 'morph' together soon
into something about the size and thickness
of a large Hershey chocolate bar
back to the topic
the PowerBook 170 I had throughout the 1990s was well built and very tough,
but the iPods that my nieces and nephews buy all seem to break right after the warranty expires
Toshiba laptops of the early 2000s were well built
but I am not so sure now
but I may still gamble on a
$2700 17" Qosimo with the built in HDTV tuner
that just came out.
The Dell laptops seem to have dropped a bit lately in durability
as several 610 and 620s have had problems
The Panasonic Toughbooks still get pretty good opinions
from the people I ask, including military
The IBM thinkpads designed at the old IBM plant at RTP, North Carolina
but owned now by the Chinese at Lenovo
still seem well built
Alienware in S Florida seems to have gone downhill since Dell bought them

Typical Mac fanboys.....everything is better on the other side.....
Look, the Apple brand of computer is a quality machine. Good hardware, great operating system, and decent technical support. However, your also going to pay twice as much for the average machine compared to a PC and you will also be severely limited by Apple on what you can actually use.....since 90% of the modern world doesnt support Mac or Apple...
You want to run Windows on your Mac? Boot Camp works great....but you still have to a copy of Windows to install on it....so there's an additional expense.
Macs dont play 98% of the video games made, let alone support a ton of very popular and well liked software. They have native support for anything Adobe, and a few other programs.
Apple doesnt have the security issues that Windows does because they only have about 20% of the marketshare that Microsoft does. To put it in perspective.....Apple only supports about 1 in 100 people....while Windows supports about 75 in 100 people.....who do you think has the harder issue? More to the point, Apple has virtually zero 3rd party support. 3rd party support is like the companies that make aftermarket goodies for your vehicle. Windows has so many aftermarket vendors that these force the company to make holes in its security. Vista was one of the very first true attempts to make the Windows operating system more secure like the Mac OS, but still maintain that 3rd party support.
Oh, and anytime you do use 3rd party software for the Apple, your at risk of security issues. Same applies for BootCamp....as you would be using a Windows Operating system, not your Apple operating system.
Why should I go buy ADDITIONAL crap when I can game right on my PC??? I dont need to, and neither should anyone else. I have a PS3 and a computer. I game on both. It's great.
I also happen to be a computer tech, and I'll tell you that Macs have just as many issues as PC's...although these are in different areas.. Go down to any computer store.....now try to buy something that will work on your Mac....OOPS...forgot....there probably wont be many....Sure, the Apple operating system supports alot of stuff....but it uses generic drivers and generic software to make it work. You dont get the same type of support you get with a PC driver.
Furthermore, most of the issues I have to support have more to do with stupid people and dumb mistakes then drivers or software issues. Sure, I have to deal with software updates and what not, but every software does...
My advice, buy the computer that you can get the best deal on with the most goodies for the amount of money your willing to spend.

It just does NOT make sense to buy a Windows ONLY PC today. Sorry.
Buying a Mac and using a VIRTUAL MACHINE to run windows (think walled-off, protected area INSIDE the MacOS - NOT BootCamp), actually makes Windows secure again.
It's uninformed stereo-typed posts like this one that need to stop. You're wrong. You're not only wrong - you're BIASed, and wrong.
FIND ME SOMETHING THAT WILL NOT WORK ON MY MACBOOK PRO, and I'll admit I'm wrong!!! I'll wait...
