I think I need to replace my turbo but I don't know what type of turbo I have. I have a 1996 dodge ram 2500 5.9 Cummins.

 

Should be the Holset HX35W. That was stock from '95 to 2000 I believe. You don't have to replace it with a stock one. They're are lots of good turbo upgrades out there. Or if your're happy with what you got you should be able to get it rebuilt for about $350
