I am also in the process of installing gauges. I have been researching where to put the transmission sending unit and cannot find any flow schematics for the transmission. I would like to have the sending unit right in the transmission. On my old Dakota I had to replace the transmission when a valve in the tranny screwed up and did not circulate the oil through the two coolers and do not want to have a repeat with this truck. Preferrably after the fluid leaves the torque converter. There are I beleive 4 test ports on the 48RE transmission I am hoping that I can use one of them. My next option will be to mount the sensor in the tranny line going to the cooler. The last option would be in the transmission pan. I am going to visit the local dealer today to inquire about which test port to use if possible. Good luck and I will post my findings.
I put my sensor in the tranny line going to the cooler. I used this replacement line cooler.

It works great and I like getting the real temp of the fluid exiting the tranny. Hooking the hose to the outlet on the transmission was the hardest part because of where it sits but overall it only took about 20 minutes to do.

i found a plug on my tranny in the upper front on the pass side there was one on the bottom but it was too shallow for the probe to go in and the threads wouldn't start but the upper front one worked but just my luck my gauge fried after i got done installing it [:@][:@]so now i got to put a new gauge in my truck and i will post on here if it works or not if it don't i will try the cooler line part that ga_noplugs told me about

The test ports on the transmission should not be used because they only have trans fluid in them when in a specific gear, ex. rear port for when in reverse. Therefor it is not practical to monitor Transmission fluid temperature using the Transmission ports.
