i replaced my instrument cluster in my 01. its not too hard, but you need a long skinny torx to remove the cover around the column. download the service manual in the merry christmas DIY at the top of the 2nd gen. beware the displayed odometer mileage is stored in the cluster, and cannot be changed. steps are more or less like this...
remove knee panel.
remove tilt lever.
remove cover around the column.
remove the dash bezel plastic thing.
remove the PRNDL wire anchor, white plastic thing.
unscrew cluster.
pull it straight out. then tilt/wiggle it past the column.

i would guess he meant a pillar gauge pod. In that case, it depends on the type, and the gauges you get
