I am getting ready to make a six hour drive to look at a truck and possibly bring it home. Can the denizens of the forum offer any useful information about things to look for with this truck? I have next to no experience with the cummins engine.

As I understand it this truck:[ul][*] is a 2500 sport long bed, quad cab[*] is a 4x4[*] has a 24 valve HO Cummins w/ 6 speed[*] is equipped with a flip over goose-neck ball but supposedly hasn't been used for towing

Is there anything specific I need to look for regarding engine, tranny, body, etc..?

what year is it...if its betwen 98 and 2001 look out for block 53.

 

It depends on the year.. If it is around 2000 to 2001 or so, you need to check for the dreaded 53 block. 2002 to 2005 pay really close attention to the steering as you drive, the ball joints on these tend to wear fast. Ask if and when the lift pump wqas replaced. Check for mods... if someone went overboard you don't wanna buy a trashed truck that is just limping. Look at the fuse box under the hood and see if there is velcro or evidence that there used to be velcro there. That will show there used to be, most likely, a programmer of some sort that is now gone. Make sure you take it on a good drive testing all facets. I would hate to drive 6 hours one way and bring home a dud. Good luck and let us know what you find!!!

welcome to DF... I think it has to be at least an '02... the ho motors came out that year IIRC. I cant say that there is anything major to keep an eye out for... the 2nd gen tracbars suck, since you have a 6 speed your looking at the AT concerns are out...

 

The truck in question is a 2001 and has around 120k on it.

What is this dreaded block 53? How do I look for it and why is it bad?
