sorry jimmy but u def overreacted. the lifetime warrantees are usually through the manufacturer not home depot. which means it goes back to the manufacturer not home depot. doesn't mean they weren't standing behind the product.
Both of them suck, but we have no choice as the big box stores wiped out all the good hardware stores.
I used to have a Old Ace store, you could go in with a part you never seen, hold it up and one of the family would say come this way, we got it right here.
Screws and washers were a few cents instead of 50 cents a piece in a see through bag.
No one knows what their doing and if they do, they promote them, but don't have them pass their knowledge on, so you end up with dumb answers, well we supposed to have them.

I guess I'm lucky. I have a local hardware 3 miles from my house. He has everything you could want. He even meets you at the door and asks what you need, then goes and gets it for you. There have been many times doing projects at home, go in and tell him what I want to do and he'll collect all the parts and show me how to put it together. Also have a couple of local run lumber yards that are about the same way. There is a Home Depot and Menard's (a million different items but not the one you need) about 10 miles away, and a Lowe's about 25 miles away. I can't remember the last time I been to any of them. As for tools I use Craftsmen and Klein and I can get them at Sears. Nothing I hate more than a big box store (don't get me started on walmart- I'll save that for another day).

We have an Ace Hardware that is about 5 miles closer to the house than Lowes. When I need small stuff or common itmes like pipe fittings, I go there. I figure the few cents more they charge for their product is worth the few cents of gas I save by not driving 10 miles more round trip to Lowes. Also they guys that work there have been there for 20+ years. The customer service is worth the few cents they charge alone.
HD is 100 times worse than Lowes. Get this, we purchased a Scott's riding lawn mower. It has turned out to be the biggest piece of crap that I have ever owned. When we bought it, they would not deliver it so I had to borrow a truck (at the time I didn't own a full size truck). So 2 days later we get woke up on a Saturday morning by a guy banging on our door. It was one of the Home Depot employees in a uhal truck. He said that they had sold us the wrong mower and that he was here to pick up the one that thewy sold us by mistake.
I called the manager of the store and he tried to explain that the one they sold us had a bigger engine than what we paid for and if we wanted to keep it we would have to pay $250 more. Not just no, but hell no was my answer. They can't deliver the mower but they can rent a uhual come and pick one up when they think they have made a mistake??? The recipt that I had for the mower was the exact one that I had sitting in my garage and we paid the advertised price they had on it while it was sitting out in front of the store. So after 2 hours of arguing over the phone, I told him to get his jackleg employee off my property before he got shot for trespassing. The guy left without the mower and I never heard anything back from them again.
I expected to see an unauthorized $250 charge on my cc but never did.Needless to say we never went back there again, and we had a ton of tools, a remodeled kitchen, hard wood floors and about 3-4 rooms of drywall paint and other stuff we had just bought therea few monthsbefore. Lowes all the way. I'm glad there are no Home Depots where we live now.
The same is for the auto parts, they would see drive upor know what you drive, didn't have to ask the year, you use to be able to go in a get a part for the truck and they would say you need this to go with that and here's the best way to do it, oh if you have a problem give us a call and we talk you through it.
You go in now, Truck? yea we have trucks with our name on them
