cummins hard start when warm
if anyone could help me out i would appreciate it so much, i just bought my first cummins, 05 6 speed manual. when its real cold out or the first time i start it for the day it start fine right up. when i shut off and start up within about an hour it also starts up fine, if it is allowed to cool for a very long time like 8 hrs will start fine also, but when i start about 2 hrs, roughly after it was shut down, it cranks for a lot longer before starting, sometimes takes two different times of cranking, i am completely aware of waiting for the grid heater light to go out, truck has 44000 miles, i am very mad because i dont understand why it is have problems like this with low miles. the whole reason i bought this truck is to have many years of trouble free. i dont know if either is related but i am reading about lots of people have problems with injection pumps and lifter pumps, is it possible to upgrade either to avoid breakdown in the future, also if somethin was wrong with them are they under factory warranty or no, because i am third owner. thanks for any input.
Start with the basics, fuel/air filter changes. Check the MAP and IAT sensors, they may be dirty. Also may have a weak FCA fuel control actuator. Or you may just need a reflash. Some people are installing new fuel pump systems such as FASS and AirDog, they have better pumps and fuel filter and a de-airator. As for warranty, if it was transferable you may have something check it out with a dealer.
so when u buy the fass kit it will replace the lifter pump? would you recommend doing this? will it make my injection pump last longer?i am just worried about being on the road 100s of miles from home and either the lifter pump or injection pump going bad. truck already has new fuel filter, and air filter. thanks
That's a weird situation you have going on for sure. YES, I think the FASS is a better lift pump than the stocker, however I'm not enritely convinced that the lift pump is the culprit. Besides, even if your lift pump does go out, you have a pretty hardy injection pump ( CP3 ).
