Hello everyone. I've been here lurking in the backgrouund for quite awhile now and finally have a question. I noticed the rear axle in my o7 2500 with the 11.5 aam rear is rated at 6,000 lbs and in the 3500 dually its 9,000 lbs. Is the only differance the extra two tires to get the weight rating? Would switching to 19.5 inch weels dot the same thing? Thanks for the awnser in advance.

 

it is mostly the fact of the helper springs the 3500's get.


besides, that "DOT" sticker is put there by the manufacturer, not DOT. the 2500's and the 3500's axel itself has no difference except for the duallies where the tubes are shorter by a little bit.

The reason I ask is that I'm trying to figure out how much of a goose neck trailer I can pull witout being over weight on the axel.

 

get the one that will pull your load. . .add two feet to the bed. . .load it up and head on out. . .raw-hide!!!!

 

yes the rating is there just for appx rating of weight but you have to consider what your tires can hold or carry both axles can take the same load but with half the tire you cant carry as much have a couple 2500's and they both get to share the load at times pull a trailer that loaded weighs appx 32000 with the trailer then you have to add the pickup to that so i hate to say i am over that axle rating but not all that is on the pickup either but the mighty dodge gets to lug that around and play with it
