oh no! not another mileage question! (for triton?) (sorry guys!)
out of curiosity (morbidly so, considering the cost of parts and labor!), what happens to your mileage after getting aftermarket tranny parts, (shafts, TQ, flex p, etc), engine parts (studs and whatnot) and turbo, along with other parts needed to have a high HP truck? do the quality and maybe more efficient parts lead to better fuel consumption? or is it plain and simple "more power, more fuel?" i think i remember triton saying a while back that with his smarty, 37" tires, 6" lift, and a mega, he was getting around 19mpg, but i am assuming he drives a stick. i am mainly asking for autos. and no, i know this would be rediculous to to JUST to get better mileage, as I know the cost would never recoup itself, but it would also be a hard kick in the ***** to spend 6 grand and then still spend over $4 a gallon at the pump to get even worse mileage... it would just be nice to see a little reprieve on the fuel bill.
also, when breaking in a cummins (assuming i ever get my new trailer[:@]) would it be better for the smarty to be happy and dancing, or quiet in the closet?
thanks

That's an interesting question. I know Triton is running an auto and I think I remember him saying he was getting 18-19 too. Drop the coin on it and let us know how it goes
depending on how the whole tax thing turns out, i might! or, since i still owe about 20k on the truck..... maybe it should go to that
. but really, i'd like more miles on the rubber before i do anything like that. just contemplating whether or not i should start setting up a separate "hands-off" savings fund for down the road...

i am actually hoping someone chimes in with alot of good thoughts here because i too think this answer would be good food for thought!
i agree with you torig... to spend all that money on upgrades, it would be peace of mind to know atleast your getting better economy out of it.

my truck is not modded when you look at the drive line. stock clutch, and everything else. all I have are my TST and smarty, and my mileage realy has not changed that much. . .gone up only a little. so while the mileage gains are not there, it is just more fun to drive
beefing up the tranny even on a stock truck wont do that much when it comes to a hit on fuel mileage. it just means it will last longer under stock conditions, or you can put more power through it over a stock setup.
you just have to remember, more power generaly equals more fuel.

sorry man.... I just saw the thread. I usually read all of them but, haven't been around a lot lately.
So anyway.... you're right. On the road, driving with some sanity, I can get around 18mpg. Obviously modding is going to take away from some of the economy but, our trucks ( diesels ) have a way of making it down the road without working to hard....they're pretty efficient. The biggest loss would likely be from going with larger injectors and/or how you drive it.
I don't see how a upgrading tranny would have any effect. It's essentially the same tranny.... just with better parts. Changing the gear ratio would definitely play a part in mileage though. I still run my 3:73's but, have though of going to 4:10 just because of racing it.
Cummins don't require a break in period.... it says it in the owners manual :-) Smarty away !
The correct set up on your electronics is what's going to really benefit you in fuel mileage. Without them, you're bound to what D/C has given you. With the Smarty you're able to load programs with the ability to go from mileage to performance. You may not have the most power all the time but, you have to give and take.
