$180.00 - Would you do it ??
Well, the planets have aligned themselves, and I FINALLY have my new tires and rims mounted on my Ram. Just had it done today. So right after pulling out of the tire shop, I drove about 2 miles down to the Dodge dealer to see about having my speedo re-calibrated. I figured that since my truck would already be there, I'd let THEM install my Cam Position Sensor, since I tried for about an hour and I still couldn't even get the wrench on the bolt. They quoted my $180.00 to install the sensor and recalibrate the speedo IF the speedo CAN be recalibrated. Otherwise, to install the sensor would just be $125.00
Would you go for it ??
I'm SOOOOO tempted because I've tried to replace that sensor on my own, andI just can't get it. My biggest fear of all is that I would get the old sensor out, but not be able to get the new one in, and now I'm stuck.
Whadda ya think? I hate going ot dealers, but this time I just might.

I assume then that you don't have a programmer of some kind? Seems like maybe an auto shop (that isn't a stealer) could do the same thing for a little less $$$ and if you had a programmer, you could recal. your speedo. Or let the stealer do the speedo and not the sensor? I see your dismay though. If I knew that I couldn't do it, I'd ask a buddy, and if THEY couldn't do it, then I'd spend the $$, unless it needs done yesterday.
Yeah, I'll have pics tonight !!
I've tried to do it, and I just can't get the bolt. Woli knows what I'm talking about. I've asked Jake and 6inarow ( where's he been? ) and both agreed that it's a real PITA. The reason for the dealer doing it is that only THEY can recalibrate the speedo, so since it's there, I "might as well". That kinda thing.
It's not a need to be done yesterday thing. I don't even know what it does. All I know is that every once in a while my tach will bottom out for a minute, and them my check engine light will come on.
What doea a Cam sensor do anyway?

Just researched this. Appearantly, all the cam sensor does is tells your computer where the cam is in rotation to time fuel delivery (and spark on a gasser). What I've found states that "if it's bad, you'll run rough or not at all." That being said, $180.00 sounds fair to me!

Donny, $55.00 seems like alot of money to recalibrate the speedo. I mean it only takes about 5 minutes. $125.00 is not too bad for the cam sensor. I would pull the tech aside and offer him $25.00 cash., if they will let you talk to him...Just my 2 cents...
Now for some technical mumbo jumbo.....
CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (CMP) - ECM INPUT
The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) contains a hall effect device called a sync signal generator to generate a sync signal.
The sync signal generator detects a machined hole on the rear face of the camshaft drive gear. The signal is used to verify the position of the #1 cylinder during engine operation.
When the leading edge of the machined hole enters the tip of the CMP, the interruption of magnetic field causes the voltage to switch high resulting in a signal of approximately 5 volts.
When the trailing edge of the machined hole leaves the tip of the CMP, the change of the magnetic field causes the voltage to switch low to 0 volts.
The CMP is located below the fuel injection pump.It is attached to the back of the timing gear cover housing.
The CMP is not used for any control of fuel system. It is used only for diagnostic purposes
