one guy in the 2nd gen ram forum said he did it but it only lasted 3~4 months before looking like crap. maybe the trick is to seal it somehow so it's not exposed so much to the elements.

It's all a matter of where you live, the weather, etc..... some people drive thru crap daily, others live where it will rust fast....normal wear n tear...

The best advice would be to indeed either seal it or shoot it with some clear coat so as to protect the metal from rusting.
