Default exhaust advice

I have an 04 CTD w/ an Air raid intake, & Banks 6 gun pda. I have been shopping around for an aluminum exhaust, & have narrowed my search to AFE, MBRP, Magnaflow. Someone at a local muffler shop said I'm wasting $ by putting on another 4" system. He recommended eliminating the muffler. I need advice.....

Do you like stacks? I would go with dual 5 inch stacks. If you dont want stacks, I have the MBRP Cool Duals with no muffler. I think the Cool Duals would be pretty bad *** on a truck with no DPF. the tip that comes with the Kit looks really nice. DirtyDodge02 has an 05 CTD with the Cool Duals and no muff, you should PM him and ask, or maybe he will find this thread himself.

he's right. . .just replace the muffler with a less restrictive muffler. MBRP makes a direct replacement muffler that is still rather tame.

there is realy no need for a 5" muffler unless your pushing 600 or moer HP on these engines, unless you just want the sound

Indeed I found it Az! 8 Lug, like Az said, I do have the Cool Duals, no muffler/cat, 4" on both sides. Sooner or later I'm gonna get a sound clip or video of it, but I absolutely LOVE the sound. No drone on the highway, but people know when you're comin'. Pisses my wife off to no end when I start it early for work when it's cold, but I just smile while I wait. A lot of the guys have the Aero's too, and I've heard a sound clip of that and I really like the sound it puts out too. I agree with Drew though, anything more than 4" is gonna be overkill. I dunno how much backpressure you'll lose, but my guess is, it wouldn't be good.

backpressure is not as important for diesels as it is for gassers. . .however you do need some.

as far as the belt screech, sounds like you have an auto. this is common since all you have is a lightweight flexplate. the engine actualy stops faster than the accessories due to the 17.2:1 compression. Manual transmissions have this heavy as all get out flywheel that allows the engine to turn just a little bit more.

is there anything that can be done, yes there is. There is a TSB out on this and I think there is a redesigned belt tensioner. however the Napa gator back belts seem to work the best at eliminating the power screech.

Hey drew I just noticed your sig. 4/28/07 392hp 716tq on the stock clutch
10/20/07 425hp 798 still on the stock clutch. What all do you have done to your truck? And how is your mileage?

the 392hp was TST alone, the 425hp was a smarty/tst stack. smarty SW#4 and TST at 2/1.

the next time I hit a dyno I'm going to shoot for 500. I hope I can get it with smarty #6 and my TST on 5/1. I may have to run no torque setting w/tst since I'm running wild TM to keep the clutch as happy as posable.

8Lug, do the muffler kit in my sig and call it a day. It sounds good under load, mild while cruising and is realatively inexpensive.

+1 ^^

I have the same MBRP muffer as Nick. Easy to install with a little trimming of the tailpipe, sounds good without being too loud and doesn't drone in the cab.
