It is good info, but it really just makes you realize how bad we're getting screwed.

I am a little confused, does thisindicate that every barrel of oil can only produce 7.8 gallons of diesel or is that an average of every refined barrel of oil produces 7.8 gallons of diesel?

I read it like it's saying that for every barrel (42 gallons) they can only (or choose to only) get 7.8 gallons of the good stuff.

Most of the refineries in the US were designed to maximize the amount of gasoline from a barrel of crude, and most of the newer refineries in Europe were designed to maximize the amount of diesel fuel from each barrel. You can't just pull a lever and change the output products; you have to design and buildeach refinery in a certain way.

I read somewhere that Europe's demand for diesel was so high that for many years they had more gasoline than they needed and exportedmuch of itto the US. I don't know if that's still the case.

The high prices we have been paying lately really suck. Direct your anger and frustration toward your elected representatives in Congress. They are the ones who can change the situation by clearing the way for more oil drilling and the creation of more domestic refineries.

Why are diesel fuel prices higher than gasoline prices? Until several years ago, the average price of diesel fuel was usually lower than the average price of gasoline. In some winters when the demand for distillate heating oil was high, the price of diesel fuel rose above the gasoline price. Since September 2004, the price of diesel fuel has been generally higher than the price of regular gasoline all year round for several reasons. Worldwide demand for diesel fuel and other distillate fuel oils has been increasing steadily, with strong demand in China, Europe, and the U.S., putting more pressure on the tight global refining capacity. In the U.S., the transition to low-sulfur diesel fuel has affected diesel fuel production and distribution costs. Also, the Federal excise tax on diesel fuel is 6 cents higher per gallon (24.4 cents per gallon) than the tax on gasoline.

This whole statement just reminds me of Enron. Remember when they were shutting down power grids in the US becausae of the same claims? How does the demand go from A-Ok one day, to severe PANIC the next?
