Trail Gear
I know this thread has been done like 1 million times, but I thought I would see what my fellow heavy CTD offroaders take with them on the trail, and where they buy it.
I take the usual stuff with me, but am more curious what you guys take. I would also like to get a hi-lift jack, to use as a jack (w/ the bumper lift attachment) and as a winch, and I would also like to pick up some miscelaneous shackles, chains, tree straps, etc. Where shouldI buy this stuff at? Oh yeah, also are there any snach blocks made for either straps or chains?...
Thanks guys-

Well, I have the whole assortment of self (and buddy) recovery crap.
Warn 9.5ti receiver mount hitch, more straps than you can shake a stick at (stay away from chains), ****** blocks, clevis's, yadda, yadda, yadda....
You know the single best piece of recovery equipment I've bought it???
My '06 Ram CTD.........to pull out my $500 beater Samurai that when I break it, scratch it, roll it over, sink it, whatever.......I can go get my 40K+ daily driver to pull it out and trailer it home.
Buy a beater, you'll be so much happier in the end. These trucks are TOO heavy and WAY TOO expensive.

When you buy the hi lift/farm jack they also sell a wide base attachment as they have a rep of tipping, plus if its soft ground where you need it it'll just sink without it. Too bad dodges bumpers can't be stock like the jeeps steel ones. Chains are useless, just extra **** to clutter and rattle around in your bed, flat are better. I dont like how the 3/4 have closed loop hooks since most people then use metal hooks, I know someone that was pulling out a veh and the veh he was towing snapped and the hook went through his cab and killed him.
If you do use a metal hook be sure to throw a jacket on the tow line. Northern tool has a good selection of ropes, hooks and jacks.

I'd go with a rope over a chain any day, breaking a chain can be a horror movie, where a strap you only have to worry about the "hook". I got a 30k breaking stregth rope cause using my truck to pull out other 3/4 and 1 ton trucks up to the frame in mud puts loads of tension on it. I recommend a "bullring" in the hitch and ascrew pin clevis on the rope to connect it that keeps your metal pieces from flying in case you manage to break that 30k rope and sling it through a window or tailgate....or someone!
This ain't where I got mine but the look like about the same deal....

chain can be dangerous, when mine break it snapped into the front of the truck i was really scared but i put logs on the chain to keep it down so it only costed me a front spot...
maybe that 12 wheelers shouldnt give the chain some slack before hammered it....

I have used a chain once just for the extra room. I agree don't use a chain unless you really had to, and throw something over it just incase.
I have 2 30ft ropes from Walmart for 25bucks each, and they both have 30,000 lb breaking strength.
lets see whats in my toolbox:
2 ropes
jump starter
cables
Tools(duh)
shoe polish(just because I screw with my friends windows sometimes)
Tie downs
******
a blanket... Should be in any toolbox when you are out with a women
ducktape
That should be good
