Default Buying a Cummins, too many choices.....

Ok guys, I know there are probably alot of threads on this but I wanted my own.

I am looking into getting a 03+ cummins. I think now that I am leaning towards an 05+. There seem to be alot of engine choices and changes. I want an HO, but which is better the 03+ or the 05+ HO? I drove four different trucks today.

1st was a 04 HO AT, seemed a tad bitslow down low. $23k, 67k miles
2nd was a 05 HO 6spd manual, really really liked the 6spd tranny. $26k, 30k miles
3rd was a 05 HO AT, that was chipped, had a AFE CAI and some exhaust stuff, was the most powerful truck of all 4. $20k, 106k miles
4th was a 06 HO AT, has a leveling kit and 35"s,felt fine, I would think should feel the same as the 05 with the same mods. $30K 29k miles

I honestly liked the 05 with the high miles the best. Felt the strongest to me, that AFE intake gave me chills when the turbo spooled.

Was there any major differences in the HOs and tranny combos? What kind of mileage could I expect from these, do the bigger tires have a large effect on the diesels? I am leaning towards the 4th truck as my friend works at the lot and can get me a good deal, but am I stupid to not just go with the truck that has the mods already and a lower price?

106k on a modded auto truck, or 29k on a stock auto truck, imho I would go with the 06, you can do the same mods to it, and not have to worry if the previous owner had rodded it and the tranny is on its last leg. I believe that after the 04.5 all of the ctds arelabbeled ho.

My self I would never buy a used truck that I knew had a chip in it as you no way to know if the last onwer ran the dog crap out of it or not. I'd go for the 2005 first and if you can't get it then go for the 2006. The 05 is 4K cheaper and it only has 1,000 more miles then the 06.

If you want to put a lift and tires on it, that would bring the 05 up to where the 06 is priced. I have 3000 into my lift and tires but didn't replace the rims.

Thanks guys.

I should have mentioned the '05 with the mods had the tranny replaced in the late 90K range. Which could be an indication it was run pretty hard, or not.

Looks like the '06 might be a no go unless I can sell my current truck outright. I refuse to be screwed by a dealer.I was think along thesame lines as blownsoot and just doing the mods myself.
