Default Please help...

Ok heres the deal, My husband should have been a politician cause he can BS me into anything and I'm not any easy person to do that to. So on that note heres what he has told me and I want to know if that is smarter or would just be worse in the long run.
We have A 2005 Dodge deisel and we like it we also have a 99 toyota 4runner. We got the Dodge because we needed something that can pull a 5th wheel and that the whole family could fit in comfortable. Now he wants to trade in the Dodge and the 4runner for a brand new Dodge, but the problems lays at he is saying that we need to get a Hemi instead of a deisel. Now I know that diesel is more than gas right now, but wont the Hemi get worse fuel milage pulling then the diesel? We pull a 5th wheel horse trailer at least 3 times a week plus it will be my main driver to and from work. I don't know enough about the trucks to make an educated disicion, but when he wants something he will tell me anything to get it and I don't want to regret it after we do it. Please help.

true, diesel right now is more expensive, but selling your diesel would be a mistake. The hemi would get horrible gas mileage pulling that 5th wheel and if your pulling it that often..well just no. The diesel also on its own gets better gas milage so its alright for a DD, plenty of ppl have diesels (at least that i know) as DD. The torque made by that diesel is far much greater than the hemi. If your going to be pulling that 5th wheel keep that diesel, Dont sell for the hemi.

If you really tow as much as you say, then a CTD is the only way to go!

I would never trade in a cummins for a hemi! the hemi gets horrible gas mileage! I looked at one yesterday that came in my dad's shop and it was getting 13.0 mpg on the lie-o-meter! My diesel that is pushing over 7000lbs gets usually around 15 mpg and has more than twice the power and towing capacity of the hemi. stick to your guns and keep the cummins around! you won't regret it!

impeach him... overthrow the government!!!!

Thats just crazy!!! keep the diesel, not gonna get anything for it on trade! The gasser is not enough truck! Buddy of mine is kicking himself, he just bought a hemi powered 3/4 ton, and right pizzed off over the mileage both empty and pulling TT. He pulls a 6500lb TT and I have my 10k lb TT pulling at 65mph I gotta stop and wait for him while he fuels up every 200 miles!! Tells me, he shoulda listened to my advice and went CTD!!!

Oh!! btw ... price of a barrel of oil is about to drop to $120usd by next week!!! So expect fuel prices to drop as well, already seeing it up here in God's country (great white north) $0.10/ litre just last 2 days!!! Last fill was $1.43/litre diesel... today I can fill up at $1.33/litre!!!

What would be a smarter move is to get a more fuel efficient car and toss the 4runner. Maybe even snag up a Turbo Diesel VW (which gets 35+mpg)

Keep the '05 ram... overall mpg will go up over time (it may have already depending on the # of miles on it). There are things that you can do to bump the mileage on the Ram such as programmers or performance boxes (the one I have has given me up to 3.5 mpg better than without).

Do the math... 5000 miles, 4.50/gal for gas (I live in Cali and that's about what it is) at 14 mpg = $1553, 5.00/gal for diesel at 17 mpg = $1470. a diff of $83 bux, now toss in towing mileage... hemi is going to be what? 9~10 mpg (IDK, just guestimating), and the CTD 14... gas @ 10 mpg for 5k would run 2250 bux, diesel @ 14 mpg for 5k miles would run $1785... a diff of $465.

the diesel starts to look a whole lot better now doesnt it...

Keep the diesel you have now, or get an '06 or '07 5.9 diesel mega cab if you need more room. I am assuming that's what he was wanting. Don't get a 6.7 or a Hemi if fuel economy is important. A hemi will pull a decent amount of weight, but it will not get the mileage a 5.9 will pulling, and it will not last as long pulling heavy and often. Plus to pull weight up hills or maitain highway speeds with the Hemi you will be listening to it scream all the time as it will have to downshift a lot.

Had to dump my Dodge gasser for a diesel. At the top of Parley's Canyon, the gasser would only do 35 mph with my boat. My diesel pulls the boat over the mountainside at 75 mph. No more pitiful looks being shot my way and no more colorful hand gestures. Yes, they throw hand gestrues in Utah, boy do they throw hand gestures.
