Default Low Running Temp

I just purchased a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with a Cummins Diesel. Love the truck but notice that my temperature gauge stays around or just over 140F. I've read where this can cause damage to the motor. Can anyone tell me what is the cause of this?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

What is the air temp where you are at? the truck when warm should be about 190.
