Default Ok....what the h#ll did I do?

Hey, I started my '99 ctd up last week...temp was -10....I had 15-40 rotella w/Wix filter and about 2500 miles on it...I noticed oil dripping out from the filter that stopped as the truck warmed up. I drove to a service station and changed oil and filter Mopar and 5-40 synthetic rotella oil. Everything is good for a few days but when I started it this morning (4 degrees) I saw the oil dripping down from the filter area again. I am going to check into this further in the morning to isolate to source of the leak but I need to know what I may have done to the it. Did the heavier oil crack the filter base? Is this common? Please give me some ideas so I'll know what to look for. Thanks...

i dont think housing would crack. try to locate leak and make sure filter is tight.

Sounds more like you put that, or a previous filter, on too tight and may have warped the threads or sealing surface and the filters aren't sealing correctly.

When you screw the filter on, is it going on straight or is it wobbling?

Also, check the filter itself, it may be damaged on top.

Could the gasket from the old filter have stuck on when it was changed, causing the new one to not form a proper seal?

Thats also a good possibility. I find it doubtful that the oil cracked the housing.

Did a quick visual before driving to work...no oil on the filter top recess...I'll try to look behind the filter and see what the base shows. Are there any external lines (other than to the turbo) present?

yeah, my first thought was a previous filter gasket may have stuck to the sealing surface. Occurs often when no lube is applied to new filter gasket.
