Default Ball Joint day!

Well today is the day I start tearing it down to swap the ball joints. Will be stopping by the tool store to get the ball joint press and adapters. I read that the whole job for 1 side can take as little as 3 hours so I'm going to put that to the test. I plan to take plenty of pics for a DIY writeup so that will slow me down some.

Carli Suspension uppers $550/pair from Carli themselves

Moog lowers $140/pair from RockAuto.com.

should be fun...

thanks, it's already looking like I wont be able to start until tomorrow... have 2 stops to make, 1 for tools and the 2nd is for a friend... helping him to find a CTD of his own. Found one that should be what he's after but he's out of town and wont be back till Wed. Asked if I could have a peek at it on my way home.

What made it take so long when you did your install? (I mentioned 3 hours/side for about 6 hours total...) I figure I could get to pulling the hub in about 30 minutes or so. I expect that to be a b!tch for sure. As long as the tools dont cause a problem, 3 hours for 1 side should be enough... If I can get one side done at a time, it'll leave my weekend free :-)

cool... I have a good impact wrench for the axle nut and have various tools & methods to remove any stubborn bolts. I am going to attempt to press out the hub from the back using a bar on the bolts & the power steering unit. slowly & carefully. hopefully it'll work ok.

how did you get yours out?

Steve, when the tech at my dealer replaced my front bearings my hubs were not rusted in like a lot of people talk about. He loosened all the bolts and gave them a tap from behind and they popped right out. My truck has lived it's life in SC where we don't use a lot of salt on the roads. If your situation is similar, you may not have a big issue with the hubs either.

well I got it torn down to the point where the ball joints are ready to come out. turns out I do not have the right adapters to press them out so I'm stuck. Took about 75~90 minutes to get down to the joints...

This adapter set should work.
