Right now I have no muffler on my 1994 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins and I never bought it with one. I Have never really looked for MPG on my truck going from a 1996 5L Ford F-150(Anything will have a better MPG) but I dont think removing the muffler will eat more fuel or at least eat enough for you to notice a difference. I have 3" straight pipe coming out the side so 4" might be different. Hope someone that has a 4" has some better imput but best of luck.

I am running straight pipe right now also. I took the cat and the muffler off not long after I got the truck, and it sounds like a beast (which the wife don't like). You might see a slight boost in performance, but nothing huge. The main thing will be the sound. Be warned that will get some pretty nasty drone, especially if you ever pull anything.
