Power steering pump - internal spring and valve
Hi all,
I changed out my power steering pump today and thought everything went well. Old pump came out okay. Changed over pully to new pump and new pump went in. Had to swap the original pressure hose fitting from the original pump to the new pump (from RockAuto).
When I took the pressure hose fitting from the new pump to put in the original fitting, the internal spring and valve fell out of the pump body. I simply slid the assembly back into the pump body and screwed in the fitting. Seemed simple. Finished the installation, refilled the PS system, bled the system and all good. Job well done and beer opened in the customary celebration.
Then I figured I'd come to DF.com and browse the Cummins forum and came across a post by Steve05ram360 with a link to an 04 FSM. Figured great, even though I have an 03, should at least be good for reference. That is when I looked up the PS pump replacement section and it says that if the valve/spring falls out during removal/reinstallation, it can't be reinstalled properly and a new pump must be installed.
Is this accurate? Am I screwed? The PS system in the truck seems to work fine with no leaks or binding, etc. Any help and advise will be greatly appreciated!!!
