3 different diesel engines in 2004?
Found a nice 2004 2500 diesel, QC, 4x4 and noticed the hp is a meager 235. I also noticed there were three different diesel motors offered in 2004 (probably more years I'm sure). What gives? Any motor particularly better than another? This will be my daily commuter and will be towing once a month a 8,000lb camper.
When I say three different, I mean three different levels of HP and Torque. All the 5.9L, though.
Thanks!!

Cali model (235/520?, I think), high output (305/555), 04.5+ high output (325 / 610)
Look underneath. If it has a catalytic converter, it was a Cali model.

yeah the 235hp is a cali truck I almost bought one.
Poor truck's nuts was cut off its slow very sluggish. the only thing that saves that truck it should have a different gear ratio in axles to help it move.
did a lot of research on that model of truck you would have to change a lot of stuff to get 325 hp out of it. but its mostly in the computer. I asked about getting the computer reflashed to a non cali Emission never could get a straight answer.
Where do you live at? if California do they do Emissions out their? If yes for both then you might have to leave it alone

The truck was most likely sold in California

where i spelled diesel deisel up popped my truck for 22k with 38 k on the speedo
all because he spelled diesel wrong

The good thing about the Cali model truck is that it will run forever.
The engine is so detuned, both electronically and in the cam profile, that it's not even close to stressing any of the internals.
Short of the VP44 going bad, that truck will go forever.
With a cam swap and a new tune, it'll put down the same numbers as the 48 state version.
