Default Brake Controller power (switch 12V)

i installed a Tekonsha brake controller the other day with the factory harness, just wanted to get some input, but is the power source spossed to be a switch 12V so that the controller turns on when the truck turns on, or is it supposed to be on all the time, because mine is. it's an 07 ram 2500... it just boggles my mind to think the factory would not make it a switched 12V (power source)
