Red face New lady with an older 2500 Diesel problem

Hello everyone, I love my 1999 turbo diesel and it has been good to me. Until tonight I have been able to haul horse trailers, atvs and broken down tractors. After searching the various forums and not finding an answer to my question I thought I would give anyone who is kind enough to answer a mechanical problem for me.

My beloved truck started up tonight and after about ten seconds it just quit. There was no noise of breaking parts or any other indication of the problem. Much to my frustration, I couldn't get it to start. The engine turns over but won't start. About a month ago I had an idiot light display indicating there was water in the fuel. I immediately took the truck to our local dealer and they showed me how to drain water from the fuel pump. After that the truck ran fine. When the truck wouldn't start tonight I again drained the fuel pump eventhough the idiot light had not displayed and the truck had been sitting for about a week. Again there was water that drained from the pump. I gave up starting the truck for tonight and will wait until tomorrow to try again. Is it possible this water in the fuel pump is the reason the truck is not starting? At any rate it looks like I will have to have my baby towed to the dealer for repairs. Thanks for any ideas.

Could be your lift or injection pump. See if you can pull any codes from the truck. Either take it to autozone or the like. Or turn your key(not starting) on, off, on, off, on rapidly(stayin the on position) and look at the odometer for codes. it should say P- pcu.. then either p done or p- then codes. then p- ecu and then codes or p done. Let us know the codes if there is any. Is it cold there? You may have gelled up too.

i would say you either lost the lift pump, or possibly have a leaky fuel line between the tank and the lift pump, and worse case, the vp44 injection pump could have died

You can do Pyros key dance to obtain the codes through the dash readout:

i would also have the dealer switch out your fuel filter while he is working on it.
