Question Wont start and loves to stall

so my 96 12 Valve has always had a hard time starting cold or hot, I always have to give the pedal a little tap, when i do that it fires up like a bat outta hell just like it should without having to hit the pedal, but if you hold the key long enough it would always eventually start, now I had today off and thought I would go up the mountain with my dog just to get out, halfway up whenever I let off the accelerator from a decent RPM it would just stall out maybe from 1500-2000 RPM and this happened quite a bit, so I tried to start it without tapping the accelerator and it wouldnt catch time after time it wouldn't go then soon as I hit the pedal boom she started right away

So not to sure what im dealing with here maybe a clogged fuel filter? is that a symptom of No starting and frequent stalls

another thing too its been sounding really weak lately, when I put it in drive or stop a light it commonly drops to about 300 revs sometimes 400

I dont know much about Diesel I just turned 19 and any Help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

your idle is too low... turn up the idle to 850 rpm's, with your auto it should be set at 850 when in drive, with a/c on,

It does sound like a fuel problem. I would do the cheapest stuff first, change filter, add som injection cleaner, up the idle as was said earlier, check air cleaner...etc, hopefully that will cure it, would be alot better than buying a new injection pump or some other high dollar stuff

I've got a 98 24 valve cummins, it doesnt like to start without a foot on the throttle either and stalls frequently as well. Ive heard that its a common issue due to a hole in the fuel line/ cracked fuel line. i was told to replace the rubber sections of the fuel line with braided steel lines. ive adjusted the idle but that hasnt helped.

with your 24v you may have a failing lift pump, better get it pressure checked other wise you will be replacing the injection pump too
