Default Finally... I can almost taste my first diesel...

Hey everyone..

I've been a lurker for some time.. a couple posts here and there but now I have something I'm very excited about.

I just put a deposit on a 2006 MegaCab 3500 Laramine to replace my 2007 1500 5.7L over the next few months.

I've been bouncing back and forth between GM's Duramax/Alison combo, and Dodge. I knew Ford was out as they haven't made a descent engine for years.

I'm just wondering, was I smart, or foolish to go with the 5.9L? Its been around for a long time, doesn't have the regen crap on it, and I wasn't interested in paying 70k for a new loaded diesel. The 2006 has 83000kms on it and is in pretty good shape. It's seen some gravel but everything seems tight.

Thoughts?

I think you made the right move both the 5.9 and the megacab are a great combination. I just sold a 08 2500 megacab with a 6.7. I really liked the truck although it took a few thousand in mod's to get similar mileage to my 06 2500 QC with a 5.9. If it weren't for other circumstances I would still have the megacab. I had no issues personally with the 6.7 and the dpf (regen) although I have heard of others that have. If I had to choose the best combination of a truck it would be a megacab with a 5.9 as it's proven power plant also in many other industrial/ag applications.

You made a good choice! The '06 5.9 is a pulling machine.

Is it just the dealer up here, or are oil changes on 6.7L's really expensive.

5.9L oilchange - $95
6.7L oilchange - $450

WTF?

I'm glad to hear it might have been the first right thing I've done in a while.. lol.

After a 2 day delay, (it's getting a going over in the shop apparent tranny leak and a new windshield), I get to pick it up this afternoon. I'm stoked.

I was running the comparisons for our trip in 2 weeks... I have a 19ft travel trailer that ways 4200lbs max.

Distance - 3700kms
MPG towing
- Diesel - 16 expected
- Gas - 7 - hand calc
Fuel Cost
- Diesel - 88.9c/L
- Gasoline - 103.9c/L

- Diesel Cost - $460.25
- Gasoline Cost - $1291.92
- Difference - $831.67!!!!

I had no idea the difference was so noticeable. The 7mpg btw is using UK Liters, so 16 towing I figure with the 5.9 might even be pessimistic. Thoughts?

WHAT?

Somebody's been puffing a little deep on the stinky green stuff!

It cost no more to change the oil on a 6.7 than it does on a 5.9.

That dealer is a crack head.

3 gals of oil and the filter and you're good.

Towing a camper 16 mpg might be a little optimistic. I get anywhere from 9 - 13 miles per US gallon towing my 28 ft camper. To get the 13 I had to keep the speed down to 55 mph.
