I have a 2004 Dodge 2500 with 5.9 Diesel. Recently I have noticed a lot of smoke coming from the blow by tube which comes out of the crankcase. I also noticed oil leaking from that same tube. I have 135,000 miles on the truck and it runs great. I burn or lose about a quart every 2500 miles or so. This is not bothering me, it is the smoking. Does anyone have the answer........ Please help

 

it might not be much help. but i was once told that if my cummins wasnt dirty. theres something wrong with it. lol. but as for the smoke issue. i have no idea, sorry, as for the oil. mine leaks also. idky, but i was told by a mechanic at my job that works on nothing but cummins that they all leak and hes not sure y but they do. and hes also the one that told me if it aint dirty theres somethin wrong with it. lol i hope i didnt completely waste ur time. but just throwin my 2 cents in there. hope all goes well.

 

the blow by is going to appear smokey, mostly it is just oil vapor, and thats why the tube will leak, the vapor condences going through the tube, sticks to the inside of the tube and will drip a little

 

yes is it blue, white or black smoke?

 

I'm having similar symptoms as well on my 2004.5 Ram 2500 CTD with 144,000 miles on the clock. It's coming out white and quite a bit the past couple weeks so been keeping an eye on it.

Anyone have a solid idea what is causing this?
Any solutions?

coolant in your oil or vice versa?

 

Not that I can see. Probably just gonna take it in to the dealership. I've spent too much on this truck the past 6 months

 

There is bound to be smoke and some drippage coming out of the tube, if it didnt the pressure would build up in the crankcase and blow out all your seals. If your worried about it, take the oil cap off and set it upside down while it is warm and running. If the cap moves off due to the steam and vapors coming out of the oil fill hole, you have a lot of blow-by and might want to get it check out, if it just shakes off b/c of the mighty rumble of the cummins, all is well. If you got some free time you could also take the valve cover off and clean out the CCV breather with some carb and choke spray, that might help some with the dripping.
