Default Question - Front end sounds like it's falling apart!

Hi there. I'm new & am hoping someone can help me.
First, I have a 2007 Ram 3500 Mega-cab Dually. I am not strong or big, but fairly mechanical for a chick & not scared to get dirty.
My problem: When driving (even on not so bumpy roads), my truck has started sounding like the front end is about to fall off.
When I told a friend's dad (mechanic), he said it was some bolt with a knuckle in it(?) that has gone bad. But he also said that I wasn't in danger of losing a wheel or anything falling off.
I am trying to find a drawing to figure out what part this is & how I could possibly fix it myself (with help), rather than paying a dealership or local shop.
If anyoen could steer me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you!

steering linkage?
dampner?
u-joints?
need a better idea. does it get clunk when you turn? or only makes noise when hitting bumps?
