May be a far stretch from your issue, but my 02 1500 did the same thing when I bought it last year. I knew it had a bad front suspension when I bought it, and all the noises and "feel" went away after I changed the ball joints. Is your truck 4 or 2 wheel drive?

Why not take the steering column apart and lift the front end off the ground and turn the wheel back and forth and listen/see where it is coming from?

Also, moved to the CTD section for more help

sounds like ball joints. have someone look at the steering components under your truck while you turn the wheel back and forth. you can usually see the problem area that way.
