Default Headlight switch bursting into flames

2nd time this has almost happened, caught it just before it started to smoke big time.

bought brand new switch and the over heating problem has gone away for now, However.. the dash light dimmer circle plate begins to heat up to the point of burning your fingers bad within 1-2 mins of turning the lights on, seems as though swapped one problem for another, im not sure of the wiring schematics but three prongs of the connector are drawing power, I still have to replace the connector because its melted here and there.

trying to get this in line until I just run toggle switches and relays, ive heard of this problem happening before anyone encountered this? any way to fix and keep stock switch?

Thanks

Here is some info on the headlight switch that may help. There was a recall but I believe it was for the 3500 and a later year. IIRC

i didnt read the links, but its bad connections at the switch that cause the problem, some times due to extra accessories added, or bigger bulbs, but in short, you can replace the switch and connector to cure, or others find better luck with installing a relay system, which uses the the switch to power the relays (very low draw) and the relays transfer batt power to run the lights

Default RE: Headlight bursting into flames...

I have a 1994 Dakota that had a headlight switch burn out in it too. I put two switches in it and then I got another switch and had to order a different switch to get the pig tale for my wiring harness,... at that point I had the pig tale put in with the new switch and then I never have had another problem with it. But I can say though it was scaring because my lights went out on a hwy at night and I couldn't see a thing.

So that's what I had to do. I hope it helps you out.

Paul
