Default Alternator/voltage gauge question....

When I start my rig (2005), I have noticed the voltage gauge hangs a bit low (around 12) then, after a few minutes, it moves right up around the 14 volt area and stays there all the time. I can't say I honestly remember if this is something new or not, and I do know the alternator is controlled by the ECM, and I do know the grid heater cycles often....anyone else's rig do this when started?? Thanks
