looking at '97 SLT ram 2500
hey everyone,
we are looking at a possible trade, F150 97'-->2500 cummins 97'.
the dodge has 189,xxx, is 4x4, and an automatic. I know diesels are a high mileage wonder, how is 189k? We will be towing, our trailer with mowers, about 2500 lbs or more if we do mulch/cleanups. I read that the automatics are a bit weaker, how worse off would we be. We like the deal, but if a manual is a must for our use, then we will try to hold off. Looking for good honest feed back. Im a mechanic, just not versed well on diesels, so let me hear it. thanks all,
-Juan

I would not even blink yeah you might need to do a few things to it Like the KDP ,steering box stabilizer or even upgrade a little with the tranny being a auto and all ..but it is like compairing apples and oranges for trucks ...2500 #s is really nothing for it to haul...i have the same truck with a standard 5spd with 400,000km on it and haul a 10,000 # 5th wheel trailer all summer long with it ...I am sure it would be good to go the way it is but i would for sure install guages right away so you can keep track of the tranny temp as well as boost and EGT's...and later a few mods small mods would make it even a better truck like i put a 125hp fuel plate in mine and gained 4mpg as well as gained big power..

Well if it was me i would for sure try my best to get the Dodge that year has the 12 valve motor and they are so easy to work on and don't have alot of problems that the newer dodges have with injector pumps and failing lift pumps..as well to bump the power up is very affordable and you don't have to use all the new age electronics to do it..i also pull a 18ft bowrider boat not sure what it weighs but my truck hardly knows it is there and i never have any complaint with fuel expenses all i have to do is think back to when i use to pull all this stuff with a gas motor and how much it use to cost me...i am hoping that one of the guys from here named dodgetrucker75 comments on here as well i am sure he has lots of other info he is great with these trucks for knowledge.I guess the main point is that the diesels and hardly working compaired to a gas motor pulling things and are really made for it and i can't comment on the Fords because i really have not had any but i do know i would never give up my 12 valve that is why i won't go to a newer truck .. hope this helps you
