Default 98 2wd cummins Ball joints and pitman

Well I'm new to this but i need some decent advice...About a year ago I had a 98 2wd 2500 cummins long box given to me (yes given to me). You get what you pay for right... this truck needs a lot of front end work. However it has been a great work truck for about a year . Motor and tranny is great. But holy crap ,the quote I got -just for the ball joints uppers and lowers both sides and the pitman arm was $2000 plus plus plus .Sooooo I have decided in my infinite wisdom to just do it myself. I have managed to rope a buddy in that owes me some favors and has rebuilt a couple of cars but neither of us have done front end work on a truck before. We are thinking its more time and effort than technical (we hope) I think I understand all the tools required puller pickle fork wrenches jacks we need to rent the press and puller... I have a good garage to do it in lots of tools ...

I'm really looking for what brand or type of ball joints and pitman arm should I buy?

What else should I be doing at the same time if im going to be ripping off both spindles?

Should I be doing anything else at the same time?

Any one know roughly how much am I looking at? The mechanic guy was talking 2-250 just for each part!

May sound like a stupid question but how do you tell what is worn out and what isnt as far as all the control arms inners outers etc?

The mechanic is happy to tell me to do more of course. But how much is enough? Obviously a whole new front end is ideal but I don't want to replace anything that doesn't need it.

Im in Canada so things seem to be more expensive here ... I was wondering if anybody out there has some advice about buying parts over the net - good or bad idea? Any replys are most welcome.
