Default noob-ish questions

first off let me apologize for starting a new thread, when im sure the answer is all ready in here some where, but i have been searching for a couple days with no luck finding...

my uncle as an '01 2500 24v, with around 90k mi.
he is now needing to replace vp44 #3. has the airdog lift pump.
is there an alternative to the vp44 that doesn't have such a high failure rate? any aftermarket bits that work better?
example: can the '03+ system be retro'd onto this '01 engine?
any suggestions would be much appreciated.
