My 2008 6.7CTD with a 2008 Chevy Allison Tranny, can it be done?

Ok guys and gals, I got my hands a good working Allison Tranny out of a 2008 2500 Duramax. have been assured it is in good working order. Is there anyway I can marry up my 6.7 CTD with it to have a kick ass combo?! Are there any conversion kits sold for this kind of thing or am I looking at a pipe dream? Where there is a will there is a way right! :icon_headbang:

fleeceperformance.com has them available up until 06' they might have one in the works for the 6.7 never hurts to call em...

Ford used to sell the 5.9 cummins bolted to an allison of some sort (I think it might be a 2000). It obviously can be done....

My question is why would you want to? It's no better than what you've got currently, and it'll cause you nothing but grief and decreased resale value.

The 4spd 5.9 CTD Dodge Tranny sucks serious monkey balls. I'm watching this thread closely. As soon as my tranny starts slipping I'll be looking at dieselhollk's post.

Get a SunCoast 48RE and forget it. SunCoast is running one in their drag truck until MADS can get the programming dialed in to get the 68RFE working right. They're putting down around 885hp/1600 lb-ft.

The Allison trans in your neighbor's Chevy truck isn't any better than the 48re in your truck. It's made by GM Powertrain and labeled Allison because they own the brand. It's not the same transmission as in the tanks, it's not the same transmissions that's in the big rigs... If you drop an Allison in without building it, you're going to have issues eventually as well.

Why not drop a built Dodge trans in that won't cause you TCM/PCM incompatibility issues?

Ok Horatio whats wrong with the 68RFE? thats whats in my o8 right now, and it seems to be doing fine! I only have 37,000 miles on it.

There's nothing wrong with it - just be a little smarter than I was. I melted all of my underdrive clutches spooling the turbo up at a light.

my tranny still works great. It's my motor that's been all the trouble. I've gone through multiple turbos and the dealer even caught the truck on fire shooting flames out the exhaust from burned oil after replacing one of the turbos.

horatio102 05-29-2011 07:08 PM

That's not the 6.7's fault, if the turbo failed (why did it fail?) it's a Holset issue, and if the turbo filled the exhaust with oil and the dealer didn't do anything to prevent a burn-out, that's the dealer's issue.
