Default Killer Dowel Pin question

Hey all. Was on line this morning looking for valve lash specs and ran across some KDP info. I'm a new Cummins owner and never heard about this before. Since my truck in a 97 and not wanting to deal with a failure of that type, I ran out and got gaskets and so on, tore the cover off and found my dowel a little past the casting. Pic included. Question is, is it ok to tap it back flush with the casting before I bolt in the retaining tab and is flush far enough in? Thanks!

my favorite way is to knock it back in below the housing, and peen the the hole over a bit, and dont even use the tab, but yes you can knock it back in with no problems

Thanks dodgetrucker75, appreciate the info. The gasket kit had the wrong crank seal in it, so my poor girl is still in the garage with her guts hanging out. A job that should have taken me 2 or 3 hours has been going on 3 days now! Ugh, they better have the right seal tomorrow!
