Default 05 4X4 problems...

Hey Guys I'm new to your forum and have a question about my 05 Ram 3500 5.9 turbo truck. When I engage the 4 wheel drive it feels like I have the breaks on. I checked the fluid in the transfer case, transmission, and in the front axle all are clean and full... As soon as I disengage it frees right up. Not sure what to do next.

Thanks,
Todd

Are you testing this on paved street or dirt? and are you doing 4HI or 4LO?

My driveway which very level in 4 wheel hi. This is new a problem as I use the 4 wheel drive often to back trailers around my back yard because of the steep grassy hill. First noticed it last week when I back my boat up the hill I had to really work the truck and the trans light came on. Thought it had just been very dry and the sugar sand was deep. Not the case.

Thanks again,
Todd

It sounds like something is binding, but every last bit of it spins when you're driving down the road so if it was binding at all, it should be binding all the time.

Good luck.

Unless there is something broken in your transfer case - chain, gears, etc..

Well I got frustrated with it and run down a dirt road at 70mph in hi and it's better... I only use the 4 wheel drive around my yard at less than 5 mph not sure why that would make a difference but it did....

Thanks for your help,
Todd
