Default oil change required warning light

Engine oil change required lite always comes up way early between changes. It will come on around 2500 miles. No smell of fuel in oil. Is this just a setting problem or does this warning actually detect a breakdown in the oil?

Its a timed setting weather it is with the time log on your engine or a mileage thing it is timed as far as i know. I change my own oil and have had this come on a few miles after a fresh oil change with new filter. I cannot remember exacts but you can reset it by turning the key to the on postion and depressing the throttle a certain amount of times. no sure though I would have to look it up myself again. its all over the internet on how to do it. hope this helps
