Default HELP, 2001 cummins 2500 with automatic transmission trouble

My dad has a 2001 2500 cummins with an automatic transmission. The truck has 92000 miles and has had transmission work done three times. I know the story, dodge auto transmissions are more junk than good. I'm not trying to start a fight about the auto. He is looking into an aftermarket transmission by ATS with the TripleLok Torque Converter and Co-Pilot Transmission Controller. Does anyone care to comment good or bad info about ATS Diesel products? Any and all info welcome.

How does your dad feel about a manual trans? Swapping in a nv4500 would be about the same as a built 47re, maybe cheaper.

Horatio102 thanks for the reply, he wished that he had bought a manual when he bought the truck. Will a manual transmission mount in a auto truck? What would be the cost of putting in the manual? I'm not transmission savvy, what is a nv4500? Who makes it?

Skip ATS. Go Goerend. http://www.goerend.com/

And Dodge trannies are NOT junk.......

ATS has a fairly shady history. Goerend is top notch, you won't find a bad thing about them. That's where I'm going for my next rebuild

You are correct there are good auto trannies out there, but dodge has not made a bomb proof auto yet. Manuals are great. Thanks for the info about goerend. Did I read goerend web site correctly they offer a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty, where as ATS offers a 5 year 500,000 mile warranty? I drive a 2008 cummins with auto select 6 speed that has developed a problem with 5th gear.

I'm not sure what Goerend offers for the 68RFE (haven't looked or asked).

I will say this, warranty is only as good as the person backing it. ATS can claim 5 year/500,000 all day long, but will they honor that warranty?

Not trying to bash ATS, but I'll never buy anything from them due to their trackrecord

Not the first time I've heard that about ATS...

Goerend and SunCoast would be my preference for stock replacement autos.

NV4500 is the factory 5-speed trans, NP/NVG is New Process/New Venture Gear, same folks that make nearly all of the transfer cases.

It'll cost you a couple grand for a decent nv4500, good clutch/flywheel, pedal assembly/master cyl/lines...

If you pay someone else to do all of the work, expect about a $5k bill.
